Frequently asked questions

What happens when a public holiday falls on a weekend?

It depends on the state and the day. Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Anzac Day and Australia Day often get a substitute (or “additional”) weekday holiday in some states, which appears in the list above. Some don’t, so the holiday is simply lost that year.

Are all holidays the same across each state?

No. Some are statewide (New Year’s Day, Christmas Day), some are local, and some are only part-day, such as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve in SA, NT and Qld. Tagged rows above show partial-day and regional holidays, which are left out of the long weekend planner.

Do I get paid for a public holiday if I don’t work?

Full-time and part-time employees are generally entitled to be paid their base rate for ordinary hours they would have worked on a public holiday. Casuals generally aren’t paid for public holidays they don’t work. Your award or agreement may vary this.
